Guyana vs Antigua and Barbuda 83 – 70

A true final it was in the match Guyana vs Antigua and Barbuda both sides gave tough competition and played strong till the end of the game. It was Guyana who played their best game of the tournament and showed the World that they really can handle the ball. Antigua played a strong preliminary round but they seemed to lose fighting spirit during the tournament. That could be seen in the first quarter where Guyana took a head start with 21 – 15. The following quarter Antigua was able to recover and improve their defence, this enabled them to close the gap and ending the first half with 41 – 39. In the second half Guyana dominated and proved to be the best, after having a slight advantage of 4 points at the end of the third quarter they unleashed their full potential in the last quarter. They made their shots count and succesfully pressed the opponent more during defence, the Antiguan side couldn’t cope with the pressure and cracked in the final minutes of the game. The match ended with 83 – 70 and Guyana claimed their first gold ever in this tournament! Stanton Rose was the driving force in the victory and scored an impressive 23 points.

The coach of Guyana was very happy with winning the match, their defense was eventually the deciding factor in the match. It was a team effort but their captain Stanton Rose really “rose” showed great game play and leadership skills. His efforts were awarded by being named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. This tournament was special for Guyana, and they’re thankful to Suriname, the host was their team to beat, and they wanted to avenge their loss back in Tortola 2015. The competitive rivalry helped them to achieve an excellent level of play and winning the tournament in the end.

Both Guyana and Antigua qualify for the FIBA Americup qualifiers which will be held in September. They will have the opportunity to go in the qualifying cycle to eventually reach the FIBA Americup 2021.
